What is BOTOX®?

Botulinum Toxin type A is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It has been used for a wide variety of medical purposes and for some time for cosmetic medical purposes. It acts at the junction of where the nerves supply the facial muscles, where it reversibly relaxes these muscles.

The facial muscles which form expressions result in wrinkling of the skin over time, and when Botulinum toxin is targeted to these muscles, the wrinkles are visibly softened. In addition, as the skin is not being creased repeatedly in the same way, further development of wrinkles tends to be reduced with continued treatment.

About the Treatment

The results tend to last 3-4 months but with repeated treatments the effects tend to last longer and less frequent treatments are required to maintain the effect. BOTOX® treatment is best suited to the upper face - 3 areas comprising the Forehead area, the area between the eyebrows known as the Glabellar, and the Crowsfeet area around the eyes.

The treatment is quick, taking only a few minutes, and involves just a few small injections with minimal discomfort. There is no 'downtime' after the treatment and you can continue your routine as normal other than following a few simple guidelines for the next few hours.

The effects often start to become obvious within a few days but the maximal effect is seen at 2 weeks. At this time Dr Osborne will see you again to review your treatment and administer a top-up if needed. This follow-up is complementary. Photographs are taken before treatment and at the follow-up for your medical records, to enable your personalised treatment to be reproduced or adapted at future treatments. These remain entirely confidential. The results depend on the initial depth of the wrinkle and heavily ingrained wrinkles may be still somewhat evident. These may be suitable for subsequent treatment with Filler.

Although the muscle activity is reduced so the skin is being creased less frequently, your face is not 'frozen' and you will be able to make normal facial expressions - smiling, frowning and so on.

Who is the Treatment suitable for?

The treatment is suitable for the vast majority of people who have noticed wrinkling in the upper face 'at rest'. Wrinkling is normal during facial expressions but BOTOX® treatment will help these lines to disappear when your face relaxes. The treatment is contraindicated in Pregnancy, Breastfeeding and certain neurological conditions. Contact us for further information if you are unsure.
